Mississippi State Takes 70-59 Win Over Lady Rebels

Mississippi State used an 18-3 second-half run to pull away to a 70-59 victory over the Ole Miss Lady Rebels (10-5, 0-2 SEC), who have dropped their first two conference games and last three overall. The Lady Bulldogs out-rebounded Ole Miss 55-39 and shot 41.0 percent compared to the Lady Rebels 27.5 percent to take the win.
"First of all, you have to give credit to Mississippi State," said Ole Miss head coach Carol Ross. "They really got after it on the boards and just played with tremendous effort. The played with more energy and at the end of the game that is what it boiled down to."
The in-state rivals finished the first half in a deadlock at 28-28 after the Lady Rebels jumped out to a 12-3 lead before the Lady Bulldogs answered back with a 17-7 run of their own to take a 20-19 lead. From there, the clubs traded baskets until the halftime buzzer sounded.
The two clubs came out of the locker room continuing to trade baskets. A pair of free throws by Forrest made the score a two-point deficit for Ole Miss at 38-36 at the 15:40 mark.
For the next six-and-a-half minutes, the Lady Rebels struggled from the field and on defense, allowing the Lady Bulldogs to roll up 18 points to just three for Ole Miss, giving State a 56-39 lead.
The deficit proved too much for Ole Miss. The Lady Rebels would come back to within five at the 1:42 mark when a jumper by LaTanya Jones cut the game to 62-57.
Junior guard Armintie Price led Ole Miss in the losing effort with 15 points and 11 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season and 36th of her career. She also nabbed a season-high seven steals.
Sophomore forward Danetra Forrest also scored 15 in the game, with junior guard Ashley Awkward adding 11.
Mamie McKinney led the way for the Lady Bulldogs (6-9, 1-1 SEC) with 13 points and 10 boards. Miayorka Johnson added 12 points, Doceide Warren 11 points and 10 rebounds and Robin Porter rounded out the balanced effort with nine points and 12 boards.
Ole Miss connected on 19-of-69 shots from the field and hit just 2-of-19 from beyond the arc. The made 19-of-23 from the foul line and turned the ball over just 10 times, while also picking up 10 steals.
Mississippi State hit 25-of-61 from the field, including 4-of-18 from three-point land. The Lady Bulldogs made 16-of-23 from the charity stripe and dished out 19 assists.
Ole Miss will catch a short break as they are off on Thursday. They return to action next Sunday, Jan. 15, when they travel to Auburn to take on the Tigers. Game time is slated for 2 p.m., at Beard-Eaves Coliseum.
