Rebels Fall To Kentucky 3-1 To Split Season Series

10/27/2006 | Volleyball

LEXINGTON, Ky. Jaclyn Toohey put down a match-high 18 kills to pace the Rebels, but it wasn't enough as Ole Miss (14-10, 5-8 SEC) fell to Kentucky (13-8, 6-7 SEC) by a score of 3-1 (19-20, 30-28, 21-30, 24-30) on Friday.

Toohey was one of two Rebels in double-digits on the night as Katie Kramer added 11 kills. Ole Miss couldn't overcome errors, committing 38 on the night, while being out-blocked 20 to 10 by the Wildcats.

"It is tough to go on the road and play in the Southeastern Conference," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "Kentucky is a good team and they were comfortable at home. They did a good job of putting us in positions where we weren't comfortable and didn't make the plays. We have to come back from this and regroup at Tennessee on Sunday."

The Rebels and Wildcats traded scores out of the gates in the opening game with Kentucky taking the first score. Ole Miss used six kills from Toohey to stay with the Wildcats early, but the home team pulled away late to take the first game 30-19.

Game two opened with the Wildcats grabbing the first score, but the Rebels stormed back behind the serving of Rachel Kieckhaefer as Ole Miss used a five point run sparked by two service aces from the sophomore. The Rebels stayed ahead of the Wildcats down the stretch, tying the game with a 30-28 win in the second frame before the break.

Game three went the way of the Wildcats as Kentucky held the lead on the Rebels for most of the period. Ole Miss could never catch up as the Wildcats took the third game 30-21.

Ole Miss scored first out of the gates in the fourth game, taking the lead and holding it until the Wildcats would catch the Rebels and tie the match at 20. Kentucky never let go of the lead, using a run to push ahead of the Rebels and close out the match with a 30-24 win in game four.

Heather Hausfield led the Wildcats with 16 kills on the night, while Nicole Britenriker added 14 kills. Ashlee Fisher put down 12 kills and Queen Nzenwa added 10 more kills.

Ole Miss will return to action on Sunday, facing the Tennessee Volunteers at 12:30 p.m. at the Stokely Athletics Center.
