Kirui Named SEC Athlete Of The Week

OXFORD, Miss. After earning his second victory of the season at the Auburn Invitational, Ole Miss cross country freshman Barnabas Kirui was named the SEC Male Athlete of the Week on Wednesday, as announced by the league office.

 

The Kaplong, Kenya, native’s second victory of the season came in a personal-best time of 23:28.65. His other victory came in his first collegiate race at the Arkansas State Invitational. Kirui has not finished outside the top two all season.

 

Kirui was the runner-up in the steeplechase at last year’s SEC Championships and advanced to the NCAA Championships. He also holds the school record in the steeplechase with a time of 8:45.61.

 

The Ole Miss men’s and women’s cross country teams return to action on Oct. 14 at the Chile Pepper Invitational hosted by the University of Arkansas.
