“Our guards certainly led us to this win,” said Ole Miss head coach Carol Ross. “Armintie was very aggressive driving to the basket and Ashley not only ran the team the way I want her to, but she was effective both off the dribble and with her pull up jumper.
“Despite their play, we were still struggling in the second half. That’s when Dee (Danetra Forrest) really came to play. She started getting after it on the glass and scoring for us inside. That allowed us to finally get some breathing room.”
After trading baskets early, Ole Miss opened up an 11-point lead midway through the first period of play with 10-straight points Price, who finished the half with 20 points off of 9-of-11 shooting from the foul line. Awkward also helped the Rebels take a four-point lead at the break with 10 points of her own in the first frame.
After maintaining the double-digit lead for several minutes, UAB began chipping away at the Rebel lead, cutting it down to three points at 39-36, before Price and Forrest dropped in free throws for the four-point margin.
Behind Carmen Guzman’s three-point shooting, UAB closed the gap, taking a one-point lead on two occasions, the final time coming at 69-68 with just over eight minutes left in the game. While both teams missed opportunities to score for a brief period of time, Ole Miss finally regrouped behind Forrest going on an 11-0 run to take a 79-69 lead. In addition to Forrest, Price and Awkward, junior guard-forward Carla Bartee and senior forward Jada Mincy got into the action down the stretch with Mincy putting in seven points and Bartee six, all in the final 10 minutes of the game.
Price went over the 30-point mark for the fourth time in her career, outdoing her previous career mark of 32 scored against
Awkward tied a career-high with six steals, while also dishing five assists. Forrest led all rebounders with 13 to go along with her 15 points, while Bartee collected six caroms.
