Bianco Announces Signing Of Drew Pomeranz, Tim Ferguson

11/15/2006 | Baseball

OXFORD, Miss. Left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz and infielder Tim Ferguson have signed national letters of intent to play for the Ole Miss Rebels head coach Mike Bianco announced on Wednesday.

The pair of signees are part of the 2006-07 early signing period and will be eligible to compete for the Rebels in the 2007-08 academic year. They join right-handed pitchers Michael Park and Logan Williams as early signees for the Rebels.

Pomeranz, a 6-3 left-handed pitcher from Collierville High School in Collierville, Tenn., has been rated as one of the top pitchers in the state of Tennessee in his high school career. As a junior, Pomeranz earned Louisville Slugger All-America honors in 2006 as he posted a 9-1 record with a 1.01 ERA. He posted six shutouts in his nine wins and also struck out 130 batters in 85.0 innings of work.

Pomeranz earned All-Conference honors as he helped lead Collierville to the semi-finals of the state championships for Class AAA. He also plays summer ball with the prestigious Dulin’s Dodgers Summer Baseball Program in Memphis.

The pitcher will follow in the footsteps of his father, Mike, who was a four-year letterwinner with the Rebels from 1976-79 and an All-SEC selection in 1978. His uncle, Pat, also played for the Rebels from 1980-83 and earned All-SEC honors for the Rebels in 1983.

“Drew Pomeranz is one of the top pitchers in the state of Tennessee and is a three-pitch guy,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “He’s been around success as he has played for the Dulin’s Dodgers organization and helped Collierville High continue to compete for championships. I think the recognition he has received for his efforts on the field speak for themselves. We look forward to having another Pomeranz play in a Rebel uniform.”

Ferguson, a 6-2 infielder from Beaumont, Texas, was rated by Perfect Game as the 55th-ranked position player in the nation and a Scout.com Top 100 Draft Prospect. Ferguson earned All-District and All-Conference First Team honors as a junior before being named to the All-Southeast Texas All-Star Team. He was also named to the “Super Gold” First Team by the Beaumont Enterprise and the “Dream Team” First Team by the Port Arthur News.

As a junior at West Brook High School, Ferguson hit above .400 for the season as he notched 18 RBI and scored 33 runs, along with seven doubles and three triples. Ferguson was clutch for West Brook as he hit .350 with runners in scoring position.

In the summer of 2004, Ferguson played in the USA Baseball Junior Olympics, leading his team in hitting as he helped push his squad to the championship.

“Tim Ferguson is an athletic player who has both size and speed,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “He is a talented shortstop who has a strong arm and has great mechanics in the infield. We are excited that Tim will be joining our program.”
