Ole Miss Softball Inks Three Signees

11/16/2006 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss softball head coach Missy Dickerson announced the signing of three prospects to national letters-of-intent on Thursday.

Morgan Button (St. Louis, Mo.), Molly Goza (Plano, Texas) and Lindsey Perry (Madison, Miss.) will join the Rebels for the 2007-08 academic year.

“I think that the three young ladies we’re bringing into this program will be a very talented addition to our previous recruiting class,” said Dickerson, who led Ole Miss to its first ever postseason appearance in her first year at the helm last season. “They will allow us to be very competitive both offensively and defensively. They are all versatile athletes and will help create healthy competition within our team.”

Morgan Button will arrive at Ole Miss with some built-in name recognition, as she is the younger sister of Rebel sophomore baseball player Evan Button. The infielder/outfielder from St. Louis has been a fixture in J.P. Cummings’ lineup at St. Joseph’s Academy for the past four years. She earned first team All-MWAA Conference honors as an infielder in 2005, batting .400 and collecting three doubles and nine RBI in her junior campaign. In the 2006 fall season, the senior is hitting .375 with 19 runs and six doubles through 22 games.

“In Morgan Button we’re getting the family atmosphere at Ole Miss with her brother being on the baseball team,” Dickerson said. “Morgan is a true athlete who has a ton of potential.”

The 5-foot-7 lefty has also spent time playing with the St. Louis Chaos club team. Button is no slouch in the classroom, either. She has amassed a grade point average of over 3.8 during her high school career. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta math honor society, while also serving as her class vice president.

Molly Goza is another in the recent Rebel line of outstanding Texan signees. The Plano native has been a force for Plano Senior High School during her prep career. Goza was named All-District first team at first base by the Dallas Morning News in 2005 and 2006. As a sophomore, she helped guide coach Cynthia Zea’s Wildcats to the 2005 District Championship and a 29-8-1 record. As a junior in 2006, Goza led the Wildcats with 21 RBI, while hitting .317 with 20 runs, eight doubles, three triples and two home runs.

“Molly Goza is a very disciplined player both defensively and offensively,” Dickerson noted. “Her line drive and power hitting ability could provide some variety to our potential existing offensive lineup.”

Goza will join former club teammates Alyssa McGovern, Becky Nye, Aly Presswood and Amber Tramp on the Rebel roster. The quintet all played on the Wicked, coached by former New York Yankees star Mel Hall.

A highly touted pitching prospect from the state of Mississippi, Lindsey Perry will arrive in Oxford with an outstanding prep rsum. The Madison native helped Madison Central reach the 2004 and 2006 state championship game. The 2004 squad amassed a 31-5 record, while the 2006 team compiled a 30-3-1 mark. The 5-foot-9 right-hander did her part for coach Brad Moody’s Lady Jaguars, as she went 16-2 as a junior in 2006 and allowed just one earned run in 109.1 innings pitched for an unfathomable 0.06 ERA. She also struck out 210 batters and tossed 17 complete games in 19 appearances. She had a 12-3 record with a 0.58 ERA and 172 K’s in 84 innings as a sophomore.

“Lindsey Perry has been very successful in her high school career,” Dickerson said. “We’re looking for her to quickly make the transition to college ball so that we can continue our three-headed pitching staff approach.”

Perry has shown herself an all-around athlete, as she also is a member of the Lady Jaguar basketball team. She has additionally spent time traveling with the High Intensity club softball team out of Florida.
