Softball Recovers From Loss, Downs Boston University to Advance to Regional Final

LUBBOCK, Texas โ Despite dropping the opening game of the day, the Ole Miss softball program rallied to secure an elimination game victory over Boston University and advance to the Lubbock Regional final.

The Rebels (36-25, 6-18 SEC) advanced to the regional final for the second straight season after recovering from a 10-9 loss in eight innings to the 11th-seeded Texas Tech Red Raiders (54-6, 21-3 Big 12) in game one. The Rebels bounced back to earn a convincing, 9-4 win over the Terriers (47-15, 16-2 Patriot) to secure at least one more game in the 2026 season.

Game One โ Ole Miss 9, No. 3 [11] Texas Tech 10 (F/8)
The day opened with a bang, as the first three Rebels reached safely against Texas Tech starter NiJaree Canady, headlined by a leadoff, solo home run from Kennedy Bunker to make it 1-0.

Emilee Boyer opened the day in terrific form in the circle, carrying a no-hit bid into the fifth inning. Boyer tallied four strikeouts through five scoreless frames, holding the talented Red Raider offense in check.

The Rebels found additional life on offense in the fourth inning, sparked by a hit-by-pitch on Laylonna Applin and a single by Tenly Grisham. Head coach Jamie Trachsel turned to her bench and called in Rachel Connors to pinch hit. The sophomore delivered one of the biggest hits of her career, launching an opposite field, three-run home run to extend the Rebel lead to 4-0.

In the seventh inning, the Rebels tacked on more run support, as Mackenzie Pickens led off the frame with a solo home run to make it 5-0. A two-out single from Cassie Reasner helped drive in more runs, as Applin was hit by a pitch and Taylor Roman came off the bench to tally an RBI single and make it 6-0. From there, Ryan Starr laced a two-run double to make it 8-0.

However, the Red Raiders were able to come together in the seventh inning and rally from the eight-run deficit to force extra innings.

Kennedy Bunker helped spark the offense in the eighth inning, leading off the frame with a single. Izzy Rettiger pinch ran for Bunker and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt and Persy Llamas promptly drove her in with an RBI single to make it 9-8.

Ultimately, the Red Raiders walked off the game in the bottom of the eighth inning, as a pair of early walks doomed the Rebels. A sacrifice fly by Taylor Pannell would end the game in favor of Texas Tech.

Game Two โ Ole Miss 9, Boston University 4
Needing a response in an elimination game, the Rebels quickly jumped on the board. A two-out single from Llamas set up Madi George, who blasted a home run to center field to make it 2-0.

The Terriers punched back for two runs in the first inning, but the Rebels offense continued to find scoring opportunities. In the third inning, Pickens was hit by a pitch and Llamas promptly drove her home on a two-run shot, making it 4-2. A George double kept the inning going and Applin added another RBI with a single to left field, making it 5-2.

Boston University would not go away, getting two runs back, before the Rebels turned to Kyra Aycock in relief. The senior escaped a bases loaded jam with back-to-back strikeouts, keeping the Rebel lead intact.

After another scoreless frame from Aycock, her offense came through in the fifth inning. A double by Reasner set the tone for the inning, as Grisham singled and Connors walked to load the bases. Taylor Malvin struck for a run on an RBI groundout, before Bunker broke the game open with a three-run blast, making it 9-4.

The Rebels threatened for more in the sixth inning, leaving the bases loaded and giving Boston University one last chance. The Terriers loaded the bases in the bottom half of the frame, but Boyer entered the game in relief and generated a quick lineout double play into the glove of Starr, ending the rally attempt.

Boyer would lock the game down in the seventh inning, striking out two to send the Rebels to the regional final.

The Rebels are back in action on Sunday, earning a rematch against Texas Tech. Ole Miss must win twice to advance out of the regional. Sunday's game is set for 3 p.m. CT and will be televised on ESPN2.
