Rebels Ride Hot Shooting To 94-49 Win Over Rams

11/19/2006 | Women's Basketball

Ole Miss (3-1) made its first seven field goals of the game and finished the game shooting 51.5 percent from the field on its way to a 94-49 win over Rhode Island (0-4) on Sunday afternoon in Tad Smith Coliseum. Senior Armintie Price led the charge with 18 points off of 6-of-7 shooting from the field and 6-of-8 shooting from the foul line.

“I was anxious to see how we would respond to a little adversity,” said Ole Miss head coach Carol Ross. “After losing to Rice we needed to come out with a good mind set and show improvement in some areas. I thought we did that in this game. I was very pleased with our effort and focus.”

Ole Miss got rolling early pulling out to a seven point lead in the opening minutes at 9-2 after easily scoring its first four baskets and foul shot by Price. The Rams scored off a jumper by Mia Marcus to cut the lead to five. Ole Miss then went on a 21-2 run to push their lead to 28-6 with 11:34 remaining in the first period.

After gaining a comfortable lead, the Rebels let Rhode Island go on a scoring run of its own as the Rams trimmed the lead to 15 at 34-19 off a Sierra Cooper jumper with 6:57 left in the opening period. A timeout was taken by Ross to regroup her Rebels, Ole Miss closed out the half the way it started the game and led 50-23 at the break.

Ole Miss kept the game from getting any closer in the second half, as every player on the Ole Miss roster played and all but one scored.

Freshman Alliesha Easley posted double-digits for the second-straight game with 13 points. She also had five rebounds and three assists. Junior Danetra Forrest, freshman Daphnee Frieson and sophomore Shawn Goff each added nine points, while freshmen Bianca Thomas and Elizabeth Robertson each tallied seven points.

Price, Goff, junior Carla Bartee and senior Jada Mincy each collected six rebounds as the Rebels continued their strong rebounding efforts collecting 51 to just 23 by Rhode Island. Ole Miss is averaging 53.0 rebounds per game on the season. The rebounding effort helped the Rebels own a 22-2 advantage in second chance points and a 48-14 edge in points in the paint.

The Rebels made 35-of-68 shots from the field for the game, including 5-of-17 from beyond the arc. After making less than 50 percent from the foul line in the loss to Rice, Ole Miss hit 19-of-27 versus the Rams for 70.4 percent.

Rhode Island was led by Amanda McGrew with nine points and Lindsey Harris with eight. Cooper led the Rams on the boards with five and Harris collected three steals.

Ole Miss will host Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Tuesday evening in Tad Smith Coliseum. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
