11/21/2006 | Women's Basketball
Rebel senior guard Armintie Price finished with 14 points to lead Ole Miss, including five points during the run to the close the first half.
“I was not thrilled with the way we played the start the game,” said Ole Miss head coach Carol Ross. “It tooks a little while to get rolling and play with the intensity I was looking for us to have. Once we stepped up our defensive pressure and got them a little rattled, we were able to put some distance between us.”
The Rebels were in for a battle with the Golden Lions, creeping out to a 20-16 lead with 7:24 remaining in the first period, before exploding to score the final 20 points of the period. Ole Miss scored the first two points of the second half, before the run stopped with a jumper by UAPB’s Arica Green.
Ole Miss junior guard Tasi Worsham scored seven points, junior guard-forward Carla Bartee added six points to go along with Price’s five points as the Rebels opened a 40-16 lead at the break.
The Rebels kept the pressure on UAPB for most of the second half of play, opening their largest lead of 39 points at the 7:33 mark of the second half on a free throw by freshman center Daphnee Frieson. UAPB was able to trim the lead down to the final score of 79-46 thanks in part to Delores Hughley, who posted 18 second-half points.
The Rebel bench outscored the Golden Lion bench 51-6 and Ole Miss held a 49-30 advantage on the boards.
In addition to her 14 points, Price also tallied six rebounds, three steals and three assists in her 24 minutes of play. Worsham and sophomore center Shawn Goff each landed in double figures for the game with 12 and 11, respectively. Frieson, Bartee and senior guard Ashley Awkward each chipped in eight points.
Senior forward Jada Mincy led Ole Miss on the boards with nine caroms, while Goff grabbed six. Freshman guard Shantell Black dished three assists and Goff blocked two shots on the night.
UAPB got 22 points out of Hughley and seven from Arika Green and Ciara Shields. The Golden Lions were led on the boards by Shadae Martin with six rebounds.
Ole Miss will return to action on Friday, Nov. 24 when they take on Northwestern in the opening round of the 2006 Junkanoo Jam in
