Rebels Edge DT3 Sports In Exhibition Contest

11/5/2006 | Women's Basketball

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss women’s basketball team was able to escape with a 78-76 win over DT3 Sports on Sunday afternoon in Tad Smith Coliseum. Senior guard Armintie Price led Ole Miss with 27 points, including the final two points of the game to seal the win for the Rebels.

“Well, exhibition games are played for a reason,” said Ole Miss head coach Carol Ross. “We got a good look at where we are right now. We saw some things we are doing well and some things we are not doing as well as we thought we were.”

Both teams got off to a slow start with DT3 taking an early 10-7 lead off a lay-up by Yomika Corbitt. Ole Miss then went on a 22-5 run to take a 29-15 lead with 5:35 remaining in the first period. Price paced the Rebels in the opening frame with 16 points off of 8-for-9 shooting from the field in just 13 minutes of play. DT3 did not stay down long as they closed the gap to five with Ole Miss leading 34-29 at the break.

Price scored five quick points and freshman guard Alliesha Easley added a bucket to get the Rebels off and running in the second period. Sophomore center Shawn Goff and freshman guard Shantell Black got in the action with Goff adding five points and Black chipping in two to extend the lead to 17 points with 16:41 left to play.

DT3 chipped away at the lead before taking a brief 74-73 lead off of a Victoria Crawford lay-up. Senior forward Jada Mincy grabbed a rebound off an Ashley Awkward miss and put it in. Mincy then added a free throw after being fouled on the shot to regain the lead for the Rebels. Price added two free throws for the final outcome.

“It was good to get a chance to play in a tight game,” said Ross. “Obviously we did not want the game to be that close, but it gave us an opportunity to see who was going to show up in the clutch.”

In addition to Price’s 27 points, the Rebels got 15 points from Danetra Forrest and eight from Easley. Mincy added seven points and Awkward and Black each tossed in six points.

Forrest led the Rebels with 13 rebounds, while Price and Mincy each collected seven caroms and junior guard-forward Carla Bartee grabbed six. Price nabbed four steals as the Rebels forced 27 DT3 turnovers on the afternoon.

Crawford led all scorers with 28 points for DT3 Sports. Corbitt added 12 points and Kamani Thompson turned in nine. Angie Williams led DT3 Sports with nine rebounds.

Ole Miss will officially open the 2006-07 season on Friday, November 10 when they play host to Southeastern Louisiana in Tad Smith Coliseum. The Rebels will take on the Rajun Cajuns at 11 a.m. as a part of the fourth annual “School Day” festivities.
