11/9/2006 | Track and Field

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss men’s and women’s cross country teams will head to the 2006 NCAA South Regional Cross Country Championships this Saturday. The University of Tennessee will serve as host for the events which will take place at Lambert Acres Golf Club in Maryville. The women’s race will take place at 9 a.m. and the men’s race will begin at 10 a.m.

Both, men’s and women’s teams will compete Saturday in hopes of qualifying for a trip to the NCAA Championships which will take place on Nov. 20 in Terre Haute, Ind. “The team is really looking forward to the meet,” says Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. “We really believe Barnabas Kirui really has a shot at being the south regional champion, but our ultimate goal is to advance to nationals.”

Kirui won the SEC men’s cross country championship in Baton Rouge on Oct. 28. His victory helped the Rebel men finish eighth in the overall team standings. He is the first cross country champion for Ole Miss since Pablo Sierra in 1992.

The South Regional is one of nine NCAA Division I meets taking places across the country this weekend. The top two teams from each region and the top four individual not on qualifying teams will earn invitations to the NCAA Championships.
