Ole Miss Track Opens Season At Kickoff Klassic

JONESBORO, Ark. The Ole Miss men’s and women’s track and field teams opened the 2006-07 indoor season on Saturday at the Kickoff Klassic, hosted by Arkansas State University.

 

Three Rebels earned NCAA qualifying marks at the meet. Kenyata Coleman qualified in the 400 meters, Jacob Farmer qualified in the 200 meters and John Yarbrough qualified in the 55-meter hurdles.

 

“It was a fantastic way to start the season,” said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. “It is very exciting to come out of the fall winning numerous events and have three NCAA qualifiers. All of our athletes came out of competed very hard.”

 

Several athletes recorded top-five school history marks. Senior John Yarbrough turned in a winning performance in the 55-meter hurdles. The 2006 NCAA Outdoor All-American finished with a time of 7.27, which is a top-five time in school history. Junior Kenyata Coleman won the women’s 200 meters in a time of 24.34, which is a top-five mark in school history. Coleman also won the 400 meters in a meet record time of 54.34.

 

Cross country All-American Barnabas Kirui won the men's 3000 meters in a time of 8:27.29.

 

James Maloney tossed a winning mark of 56-01.25 in the weight throw, also a top-five mark. Rodney Lockhart won the men’s 400 meters with a time of 47.92.

 

Britney Reese turned in a mark of 41-00.25 to win the women’s triple jump. The jump places her second all-time in school history behind former All-American Tisha Parker. Reese also turned in victories in the long jump with a top-five school mark of 19-06.00 and in the high jump with a top-five school jump of 5-08.00.

 

In all the Rebels and Lady Rebels combined for nine first place finishes and 33 top-five finishes.

 

In addition to ASU and Ole Miss, the two-day event featured teams Memphis, Tulane, Arkansas-Little Rock, Troy, Mississippi College, Missouri State, Southeast Missouri State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Central Arkansas, Harding, and Jackson State.

 

Ole Miss travels to Fayetteville, Ark. on Jan. 12 for the Arkansas Invitational.
