LAFAYETTE, La. - Ole Miss was on the short side of a pitcher's duel in the Rebels' second game of the season, dropping a 2-0 decision to No. 18 Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday at the Ragin' Cajuns Softball Park.
Junior left-hander Mary Jane Callahan (0-1) pitched a complete-game three-hitter, allowing one earned run and striking out four for the Rebels, who dropped to 1-1 on the young season. Louisiana-Lafayette's Krystal Lewallen (2-0), who was the 2005 Division II Player of the Year, led the Ragin' Cajuns to victory with a complete-game shutout and eight strikeouts.
"Our girls played really well today," said Rebel head coach Missy Dickerson. "Overall, it was a really good game. To hold the No. 18 team in the nation to three hits and two runs on balls that could have been caught, that's a great game. If our players would have had a little more discipline at the plate, we could have been a lot more successful. Their pitcher was talented, but nothing we could not have handled.
"Mary Jane pitched great except for a couple of mistakes. It is a shame she had to get a loss after such a good performance."
Louisiana-Lafayette (2-0) got on the scoreboard early with an unearned run in the top of the first inning when a leadoff walk, passed ball and pair of groundouts turned into the game's first score.
The only other run in the game came in the top of the third, when the Ragin' Cajuns got two of their three hits, a pair of doubles, to take a 2-0 lead.
The Rebels had their best chance at a comeback in the bottom of the fourth with two runners on base and one out after Callahan doubled down the right-field line and freshman catcher Michelle May was hit by a pitch. A foul-out and strikeout ended the rally, though.
Jessica Plemons and Lauren Rowe notched Ole Miss' two other hits in the game.
