LAFAYETTE, La. - Ole Miss got its first home run of the season, a two-run shot by sophomore third baseman Lauren Rowe in the fifth inning, as the Rebels (2-1) defeated Grambling State 8-0 on Saturday afternoon for the second time at the Louisiana Classics tournament.
Senior Dana Brill tossed a five-inning one-hitter and struck out six Lady Tigers to get her first win of the season.
Freshman catcher Michelle May led the offensive attack with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate and two RBI. Mary Jane Callahan and Lisa Conchos added two hits apiece.
"I thought we came out flat in this game," said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. "At times, you can get away with that, and we were fortunate to get enough hits and runs and get out of the game early. It was not one of our best performances, but I think it helped the confidence of some of our girls at the plate.
"Dana also threw a really nice game. Our pitching staff is our star right now, and we just need to help them out by scoring some runs."
Conchos got the scoring started again for Ole Miss with an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning.
In the bottom of the third, May made the score 2-0 with an RBI double and Conchos added an RBI single for her seventh RBI in three games. A Vanessa Gibbs sacrifice fly gave Ole Miss a 4-0 advantage.
May got her second RBI in the bottom of the fifth when she drove in Callahan with a single to make it 5-0. Ole Miss added four runs total in the fifth, two off the Rowe homer, and the mercy-rule eighth run when Kayla Mosley scored on a wild pitch.
Grambling State fell to 0-4 with the loss.
The Rebels return to the playing field for the final day of the Louisiana Classics on Sunday. They will face Memphis at 10 a.m. before matching up with the host Ragin' Cajuns at 3 p.m.
