BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Ole Miss softball team (2-6) lost another close game at the FAU Dunkin' Donuts Classic, this time a 3-1 decision to Florida International (3-5) in Saturday's early-morning contest at the FAU Softball Stadium.
Junior Mary Jane Callahan (0-4) pitched another strong game, as she gave up two earned runs and four hits with seven strikeouts in six innings of complete-game work.
For the third straight game, Ole Miss out-hit their opponent but failed to score more runs. The Rebels had five hits from five different players in the contest.
The first five innings breezed by before FIU's sixth inning at the plate. After a leadoff single, Ole Miss could not handle a sacrifice bunt which gave the Golden Panthers two runners with no outs. After Callahan intentionally walked the three-hole designated player, Jennifer Powell, the cleanup-hitting Tabitha Embry hit a two-run single to center field for the game's first two runs. A sacrifice fly gave FIU a three-run lead heading into the seventh.
Ole Miss made a fight of it in the seventh with a two-out rally. Brittany Warner singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Vanessa Gibbs drove her in with a single to left-center. The two-run deficit was as close as the Rebels would come, though.
Freshman second baseman Lisa Conchos had a five-game hitting streak snapped in the contest, while Lauren Rowe extended her streak to three games.
