EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Junior left-hander Mary Jane Callahan broke the Ole Miss career strikeout record and pitched a complete-game shutout as the Rebels won their second game on Sunday, a 3-0 victory over Evansville.
Callahan (1-6) scattered four hits and collected eight strikeouts in the contest, giving her 375 K's for her career, as she passed previous record-holder Amanda Fine (1997-99), who had 374 in her Rebel career.
"Mary Jane pitched a great game today," said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. "I was proud of our whole team effort in both games today. I knew we would be competitive if we could just minimize our mistakes and drive in some runs, and our two wins today showed that."
Ole Miss (4-10) broke a scoreless tie with a three-run sixth inning, which was enough to secure the victory.
An RBI double by freshman catcher Michelle May scored senior infielder Rebecca McIntire, who had reached on an error, to give Ole Miss the first run of the game. The Rebels got two more when the next batter, sophomore Erin Faircloth, singled to center field to knock in Lauren Rowe and Kayla Mosley, who pinch ran for May, giving Ole Miss a 3-0 advantage.
Callahan bested Evansville's Danny Murphy (0-1) in the pitcher's duel, as Murphy also pitched seven innings and did not allow an earned run, while giving up six Rebel hits.
May went 2-for-3 on the day to lead the Rebels at the plate, while four other Rebels collected hits, including the big two-RBI single by Faircloth.
Ole Miss will hope to extend their two-game winning streak when the team travels to Austin, Texas, next weekend for the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational, hosted by the University of Texas Longhorns.
