GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Ole Miss men's and women's track and field completed the third and final at the SEC Indoor Championships. The Rebel men placed ninth overall, while the Lady Rebel finished tenth. The tenth place finish was the highest finish for the Rebel women since placing sixth in 2001.
"I am proud of the effort the kids give today and this weekend," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "I believe this is the most events we have ever scored in on the women's side. We are very young on both the men's and women's side, but we were very competitive. Our future is very bright."
Sophomore John Yarbrough placed sixth in the men's 55m hurdles. His time of 7.45 earned Ole Miss three team points. Kenyata Coleman and Rodney Lockhart finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 400-meters finals. Coleman earned two points for the Lady Rebels, while Lockhart earned one point for the Rebel men.
Devin Darnall earned one point with his eight place finish in the 800-meters finals. Barnabas Kirui added one point with an eighth place finish in the 5,000-meters. Derek McGuire set a school record with a throw of 58-01.25 in the shot put. His mark placed him fifth and earned Ole Miss four points.
"We just need to improve on our finishes," said Walker. "We had several seventh and eighth places finishes. We need to turn those into higher finishes."
The Rebel men's and women's 4x400m relay teams both scored. The Rebel men placed fifth, while the Lady Rebels finished eighth.
Ole Miss heads to the NCAA qualifiers beginning on Wednesday. The qualifiers are held on campus sites around the country.
