OXFORD, Miss. - Senior right-hander Dana Brill tied a school record with 15 strikeouts and junior lefty Mary Jane Callahan pitched a one-hitter as Ole Miss won 2-0 and 1-0 over Stephen F. Austin Tuesday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
Ole Miss (9-17) snapped a three-game skid, while the Ladyjacks (8-15) have now lost five straight.
"These were two good wins for us," said first-year Rebel head coach Missy Dickerson. "We hit some rockets today, so it's good to get a couple of victories out of that. Dana and M.J. both had outstanding games. For Dana to get 15 strikeouts and then M.J. to pitch a one-hitter is really impressive. I hope we can carry this over into Southern Miss and then some of our weekend SEC games."
A pair of seniors led the Rebels to victory in game one. Brill (4-5) tied the school record with 15 strikeouts, setting the seven-inning record as Callahan had 15 K's in last year's 14-inning win over No. 4 UCLA. Brill also gave up just two hits in the contest.
Center fielder Stacy McCommon went 2-for-3 in the game, as she drove in the Rebels' first run in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI double, plating freshman catcher Michelle May. The Amory, Miss., native also scored the Rebels' second run when junior right fielder Brittany Warner singled up the middle in the sixth. McCommon had reached third with her first triple of the season.
The Rebels out-hit the Ladyjacks 6-2. The Ole Miss offense also walked five times off of Stephen F. Austin starter Kari Hugie (2-4), while no Rebels struck out in the 2-0 victory.
The second game featured an even closer pitcher's duel, as Callahan (4-10) allowed a single Ladyjack hit, walking three and fanning seven. With the win, Callahan moved into a tie for second place on the all-time Rebel chart with her 27th career victory, tying Jennifer Hughes (1999-2001).
Stephen F. Austin's Traci Moore and Nicole Carter combined to give up one Rebel run on six hits, while walking one and striking out one, but it was not enough, as Moore took the loss to fall to 3-4 on the year.
Ole Miss scored its lone run in the bottom of the second, but it was a big one, as May hit the first home run of her Rebel career over the left field fence. She was the first Ole Miss player besides Lauren Rowe to knock one out of the park this year, as the team now has four total.
In both games, the Rebels had their opportunities, leaving the bases loaded or runners in scoring positions on a handful of occasions to leave 16 total runners stranded on the day.
The pitching carried the Rebels, though, as the team now has five shutout victories on the year.
Ole Miss will hit the road on Thursday as the team travels to Hattiesburg to take on in-state rival Southern Miss in a 5 p.m./7 p.m. doubleheader.
