BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ole Miss junior Kyle Ellis was named the Southeastern Conference Male Golfer of the Week, the league office announced Thursday. The honor is the first of Ellis' career and the first for a Rebel golfer this season.
"Kyle is very deserving of this award," said Ole Miss head coach Ernest Ross. "He has been our most consistent golfer all year and won his first collegiate tournament by a wide margin. I believe Kyle is playing the best golf of his career right now."
Ellis claimed the USA Spring Golf Classic title on Tuesday after turning in a total of 68-73-71--212. He led the tournament from start to finish and posted two of three rounds under par, including a season low 68 in the first round of play. His top finish is the first of the season for any Ole Miss golfer. His total of 212 was four strokes better than the next finisher and was also four strokes under par.
"In the past several years I have had a few tournaments where I was close to or in the lead, but did not finish on top," said Ellis, a Senatobia, Miss., native. "It's really fulfilling to finally win one. It's also a tremendous honor to be named SEC Golfer of the Week."
Ole Miss will return to the links on April 1, when they travel to Augusta, Ga., for the Augusta College Intercollegiate.
