Ole Miss Dual Meet
Rebels Conclude Successful Day At Ole Miss Dual Meet
3/25/2006 | Track and Field
March 25, 2006
OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2006 home outdoor season in a big way on Saturday. Fourteen Ole Miss athletes earned NCAA Regional qualifying marks, and three Rebels set new school records.
"It was really a great day for Ole Miss track and field," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "It wasn't the best conditions, with the wind and the cold. To set three school records and have fourteen athletes earn NCAA Regional marks shows the determination of our athletes."
The day started off fast as freshman Marlee Kevech established a new school record with a mark of 147-04 in the day's first event, the javelin. The Washington, Penn. native also qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Regional with the mark. Senior Lamar Daley, a Lone Star, Miss. native, then stepped up and broke the men's javelin record with a mark 189-09.
The records were not done falling. Freshman Derek McGuire, a Watertown, N.Y. native, eclipsed the school record in the shot put with a mark of 57-09.00. McGuire's mark was also a NCAA Regional qualifying mark.
"Those three athletes really preformed outstanding today," said Walker. "To have two freshmen set school records in the same day shows how bright our future is, and Lamar has worked so hard through his career for this record."
School records were not the only accomplishment for Ole Miss on the day, as nine Rebel men and five Rebel women earned NCAA Regional qualifying marks. The men's 4x100m relay team of Rickie Bratton, Chris Lawson, Ray Jadusingh and Ed McCall turned in winning a time of 40.58 to regionally qualify. The duo of Rodney Lockhart and Jacob Farmer turned in a 1-2 finish in the 400 meters with qualifying times of 47.23 and 47.26, respectively. Freshman Barnabas Kirui and junior John Yarbrough took home first place finishes and qualified in the 3k steeplechase and 110m hurdles, respectively.
Like the Rebel counterparts, the Lady Rebel 4x100m relay team of Marquita Aldridge, Kadeshia Fortune, Kim Mulkey and Cachet Murray turned a winning time of 45.49 to regionally qualify. Aldridge and Murray also took first place and earned qualifying marks in the long jump and 100 meters, respectively.
"We really competed well in every event," said Walker. "To have that many qualifying marks and more that were close to qualifying shows the depth of our team. I am very proud of all our athletes."
In addition to the qualifying marks Ole Miss took home first place finishes in the men's 5,000 meters (Kirui), long jump (McCall), triple jump (Adewale Odetunde), and the women's 200 meters (Mulkey), high jump (Carmia Carroll).
The Rebels and Lady Rebels also won every one of the dual meets, in which teams are pitted against one another in scoring. The Rebel men and women defeated all seven of the teams they faced.
"It was big for us to defeat everyone in the dual matches," said Walker. "These are programs we face all the time, and to beat every one of them was important."
Ole Miss travels to Tampa, Fla. next weekend for the South Florida Invitational.
"I am really looking forward to the USF meet," said Walker. "We need to have a strong meet and continue our momentum from this weekend."
