OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's tennis fell to 29th-ranked Kentucky 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center. With the loss, the Lady Rebels are now 7-6 overall and 1-5 in the SEC.
Kentucky got on the board first by taking two of three doubles. Ole Miss' Virginia Tomatis and Ilona Somers defeated Kim Coventry and Carolina Escamilla, ranked No. 43, 8-5 at the top spot. The Wildcats picked up wins on courts two (8-5) and three (8-6) to grab the 1-0 lead. Ole Miss dropped to 0-5 this year when losing the doubles point and 7-41 since 2002.
The Wildcats went 2-0 when Danielle Petrisko handed Lady Rebel Nika Koukhartchouk a 6-2, 6-0 loss at No. 4 singles.
Ole Miss pulled to within 2-1 after Somers completed her impressive 6-2, 6-3 win over UK's Lara Maurer at No. 2 singles. Somers improved to 9-2 in dual matches.
That was it for the Lady Rebels, as Kentucky won three three-setters in the remaining matches for the win. One of those wins came at No. 3 singles, where freshman Kseniia Tokarieva lost her first match of the year in singles after beginning 12-0.
The Lady Rebels will try to get back on the winning side Wednesday as they host Troy at 2 p.m., in their final non-conference match of the season before hosting LSU and Arkansas next weekend.
