OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's tennis team downed Troy University 6-1 Wednesday afternoon at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center to snap a three-match losing streak and improve to 8-6 overall.
The Lady Rebels got on the board first by taking the doubles point. Preethi Subramanian and Carlin Cochran downed Shamiaa Elsisi and Caroline Jouanin 8-4 at No. 3 doubles, and then Kseniia Tokarieva and Nika Koukhartchouk improved to 11-3 with their 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles.
Ole Miss gained straight set wins at Nos. 4-6 for the win. Mimi Renaudin ended a four-match losing skid, dominating Jouanin 6-0, 6-0 on court six. Subramanian finished off Shamia Elsisi 6-4, 6-1 on court five, and then Koukhartchouk downed Annabelle Bares 6-4, 6-1 on court four to clinch the win.
"This was a good win for our confidence," head coach Mark Beyers said. "Troy had defeated Mississippi State and Auburn earlier in the season. We talked about that with the players. We won the doubles point and then gained momentum in singles. In the matches where we won the first sets, we were able to step it up in the second set. The matches where we lost the first set, we were able to battle back."
Ilona Somers came back to win her match at No. 2 singles in a supertiebreaker, and Tokarieva defeated Tsitsi Masviba 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to complete the scoring.
Troy got their only win on the day at No. 1 singles, where Rawia Elsisi held off Lady Rebel Virginia Tomatis in a third set supertiebreaker.
The Lady Rebels will host LSU Friday at 4 p.m. The first 100 fans to the match will receive a free t-shirt courtesy of the Ink Spot.
