OXFORD, Miss. - A record 25 Ole Miss athletes have qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Mideast regional beginning May 26 in Knoxville, Tenn.
The two-day event, hosted by the University of Tennessee, features athletes from Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
"We are very excited about the NCAA regional," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "We have 13 male qualifiers and 12 female qualifiers for a record total of 25. I believe with the quality of athletes we have competing a good number could advance to the NCAA Championships."
Rebel men who have qualified include Anka Autman, Charles Bailey, Rickie Bratton, Michael Coleman, Jacob Farmer, Ray Jadusingh, Barnabas Kirui, Chris Lawson, Rodney Lockhart, Ed McCall, Derek McGuire, Kao Wokoma and John Yarbrough.
Rebel women who have qualified include Marquita Aldridge, Amber Bledsoe, Carmia Carroll, Kenyata Coleman, Sirdonea Davis, Lindsay Doucett, Kadeshia Fortune, Marlee Kevech, Susan Legatova, Kim Mulkey, Cachet Murray and Crystal Stewart.
The top-five finishers in the individual events, and the top-three finishers in each relay, automatically advance to the NCAA championship meet. After all of the automatic qualifiers, based on their finish at each regional meet, have been identified, the committee will place the next seven finishers, based on regional finish, in each event into the national at-large pool. The at-large athletes are then ranked in order of their best performance of the year, including the regional meet, and the committee will begin filling the remaining open spots from the top of the at-large list until the maximum number of 544 competitors is reached.
The 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held June 7-10 in Sacramento, Calif.
