KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Carmia Carroll turned in an outstanding performance on day one at the NCAA Mideast regional in Knoxville, Tenn. to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Carroll's mark of 5-09.25 tied her personal best set during last summer's Pam Am Junior Games and placed her third overall.
"This was a great breakthrough for Carmia," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "She has been very close all season and put it together at the best time. She barely missed the mark of 5-11.25 which would have been a school record. She has a great chance to show her abilities at nationals."
Senior Marquita Aldridge continued her consistent effort with a mark of 20-08.50 in the women's long jump. Aldridge's mark placed her fifth overall and was good enough to advance to the NCAA Championships.
"This is really the end of a great career for Marquita," said Walker. "She has advanced to the indoor and outdoor championships both her junior and senior year. She has been such a consistent performer for us."
In the preliminary races sophomore Kenyata Coleman turned in a time of 53.26 to finish seventh in the 400 meters and advance to tomorrow's finals. Colman's time was her fastest in the outdoor season. The women's 4x100-meter relay team also advanced to tomorrow's finals with a time of 45.04.
On the men's side it was an all-Yarbrough finish in the men's 110-meter hurdles, as Ole Miss sophomore John Yarbrough and his older brother Middle Tennessee State senior Linnie Yarbrough finished 1-2 in heat two. The elder Yarbrough finished with a time of 13.49, while the younger Yarbrough turned in a time of 13.55. Yarbrough's time of 13.55 was a personal best and moves him into second place in school history. Both brothers advanced to tomorrow's finals.
"I was very proud of John," said Walker. "I was neat to see the family rivalry between him and his brother. John ran anther great race and has continued to improve all season."
Ole Miss concludes the NCAA Mideast regional tomorrow. The day kicks off with the women's hammer at 10 am and running events beginning at 4 pm.
