AUBURN, Ala. - The Ole Miss Rebel softball team split a pair of games with No. 20-ranked Auburn on Saturday, falling 2-0 in the first game and pulling out a 5-4 win in game two, at Jane B. Moore Field.
After splitting, Ole Miss moves to 23-35, 9-20 (SEC) on the season, while the Tigers go to 34-18, 15-14. The Rebels and Tigers will conclude a three-game series with a final game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
"I think we learned a lot from the first game," said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. "The girls came out with a `never say die' attitude in the second game. Every time Auburn tied or went ahead, we just found a way to come back. I think it shows the determination of this team."
After dropping game one in a no-hitter, Ole Miss rebounded with eight hits in winning the second game 5-4. The Rebels got on the board early taking a 1-0 lead after the first inning. A single by sophomore first baseman Erin Faircloth brought home pitcher Mary Jane Callahan. Callahan had opened the game with a single and was brought around the bases after a sacrifice bunt and a walk moved her to third base before Faircloth's single.
Auburn tied it up in the bottom of the second inning with one run. Ole Miss took another brief one-run lead in the top of the third, before the Tigers would tally two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead.
The Rebels blistered the bats for three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Senior third baseman Rebecca McIntire singled to left field followed by a single by freshman short stop Lisa Conchos. With runners at first and second, sophomore second baseman Lauren Rowe drilled a home run to left field to put three runs onthe board for Ole Miss.
The Tigers notched one run in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Ole Miss' 5-4 lead would be the final decision.
Senior right-hander Dana Brill got the win on the mound for the Rebels. Brill, who pitched four innings, gave up just two hits while recording three strike outs and three walks. Junior left-hander Mary Jane Callahan pitched the other three innings. Callahan gave up seven hits, while striking out one batter and walking two.
Beth DiPietro took the loss for the Tigers. DiPietro gave up six hits, while collecting two strike outs and one walk.
In the first game, Brill (12-15) gave up just three hits, while striking out four with two walks for Ole Miss. The first walk given up by Brill proved costly as Auburn third baseman Kristina McClain scored after picking up a walk in the fourth inning. McClain advanced around the bases behind a sacrifice bunt by short stop Ashley Griffin and a single to right field by Sara Ghezzi.
Ole Miss was shut out for the 19th time this season as Holly Currie (18-10) picked up a no-hitter for the Tigers. Currie recorded eight strike outs, while giving up two walks in the first game.
