Ole Miss Cross Country Closes Out Season At NCAA Regional

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Ole Miss cross country teams closed out the 2005 season Saturday, at the NCAA South Regional hosted by the University of Florida. The Rebel men placed 16th, while the Lady Rebels finished the race 22nd, which was held at the University of Florida Golf Course.

Sophomore Kyle Lewis was the top men's finisher for Ole Miss with a time 32:35.79, which placed him 53rd overall. Junior Shannon Chandler placed 78th in the women's race with a time of 23:05.72, which was the best finish among Ole Miss women.

Alabama won the men's race with 40 points, just seven points ahead of second place Florida State. Those two teams earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships. Tonny Okello from South Alabama took the men's individual title with a time of 29:31.70.

On the women's side, Tennessee won their fourth straight South Region title with 76 points to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships. Georgia also automatically qualified for NCAA Championships with a second-place finish with 98 points. Shannon Womack of Tennessee-Chattanooga won the women's race with a time of 19:50.16.

Also running for the Ole Miss men were, Justin Jernigan (32:40.08, 55th), Stephen Clevenger (33:26.62, 80th), Seth Conerly (36:43.63, 135th), Matthew Merritt (36:55.29, 136th) and Devin Darnall (37:56.04, 139th).

Also running for the Ole Miss women were, Samantha Mazer (23:53.40, 116th), Lindsey Doucett (24:09.69, 132nd), Micah Poireck (25:19.93, 158th) and Cassie Kipper (26:27.14, 165th).
