Rebels Resume Two-A-Days
8/15/2006 | Football
, Miss. - The Ole Miss football team resumed two-a-day practices Tuesday, going in shells both in the morning and the afternoon sessions in preparation for the Sept. 3 season opener against Memphis.
"We went about two and a half hours in both practices, doing a lot of fundamental work," head coach Ed Orgeron said. "We are trying to make progress every day. We are still installing our offense and defense. We still have some work to do."
Coach Orgeron talked in his Media Day press conference about mixing and matching players on the defensive line to find the best four. He reiterated that Tuesday, saying "We are making a little progress, but it's still not where we want it. We have a lot of work to do there."
Asked about defensive tackle Brandon Jenkins, who just joined the team a few days ago, Coach Orgeron said he's doing "OK."
"We need him to come along. We need him to have a good year. The guy who has been very consistent up front, though, is Jeremy Garrett," Coach O stated. "He's having a solid camp with a great work ethic. He has solidified the nose tackle position.
Jeremy has a year in our program and now understands how to play nose tackle. He understands the weight room, the nose tackle techniques and has gained maturity."
Orgeron also explained the earlier decision to move Garry Pack to "Will" linebacker from "Sam", and then the move back.
"The "Will" is in a position to make more plays in our scheme than the "Sam", and we were looking for the best guy there. We tried moving Garry there, but Quentin (Taylor) came to camp with a great attitude so we moved them back," Orgeron explained. "We knew we could always move Garry back to "Sam", plus we were expecting Rory (Johnson) to be here."
The annual "Meet the Rebels Day" featuring coaches and players from the Ole Miss football team, will be held Saturday, Aug. 19 at the Indoor Practice Facility.
Lunch will be served from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at $10 per box lunch. Head coach Ed Orgeron will speak at approximately 12:15 p.m.
The Rebel football players will be on hand for autographs and photographs from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Posters and schedule cards will be available for free, and fans may purchase the 2006 football media guide for $15.
The cheerleaders and Rebelettes will be present as well as the volleyball team.
Following the autograph session, the team will take to the practice fields adjacent to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium for a full-squad scrimmage. The scrimmage is open to the public.
The day will conclude at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium, as the defending SEC Western Division Champions host Oklahoma State in an exhibition game at 6:00 p.m.
