Rebel Track Family Loses Former Athlete Dear

OXFORD, Miss. - Funeral arrangements have been set for former Ole Miss track and field All-American Gabe Dear, who lost his life on Tuesday. Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in his hometown of Brandon, Miss.

 

A four-year letterwinner from 1987-1990, Dear earned All-America honors, along with teammates Michael Cox, Thomas Johnson and George Kersh, in 1990 as a member of the men’s 4x400 meter relay team, which finished sixth in the country. Dear was also a member of the shuttle hurdle relay team that holds the school record with a time of 1:0173.

 

Dear held the rank of captain in the United States Army and was a member of the 1st Brigade, 87th Division, a training support unit. Dear’s unit had recently been mobilized for Iraq.

 

Dear is survived by his wife of ten years, Sacia, and three children, Micah, 10, Gabrielle, 6, and Joshua, 5.
