Grove Opens For Tailgaters Saturday At Midnight

8/30/2006 | Athletics

University of Mississippi officials have announced that the Grove officially opens for tailgaters at midnight Saturday for Sunday's home football game with the University of Memphis.

The season opener was moved to Sunday (Sept. 3) with a 3:30 p.m. kickoff to accommodate a national ESPN broadcast. UM Police Chief Jeff Van Slyke said there are to be no tents set up on campus before midnight Saturday.

"Any early tent set up on Friday or Saturday will be removed by university officials," Van Slyke said. The Grove is the site of a university-sponsored pep rally 4:30-8 p.m. Saturday; hence, the need to keep the area clear of tents.

The Grove normally opens at midnight Friday for Saturday football games.

Van Slyke said UPD intends to monitor the campus closely for compliance. "We are asking our fans to cooperate with this request about setting up tents to help ensure all fans have an enjoyable and safe weekend on campus."
