9/1/2006 | Track and Field
The Ole Miss men were led by a pair of native Kenyans in Barnabas Kirui and Gabriel Ngwiri. Kirui won the men’s race with a time of 19:42.65, while Ngwiri finished second with a time of 20:20.29. Also leading the way for the Rebels were Kyle Lewis (4th, 20:20.98), Seth Conerly (13th, 21:56.35) and Devin Darnall (15th, 22:19.71)
Ole Miss bested the field with a total of 34 points. Arkansas-Little Rock finished second with a total of 40. The Rebels had the top two individual times, as well as four of the top five and five of the top 15.
“This was a great way to start the season,” said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. “We had great individual performances that combined for a great team effort. To claim five of the top 15 times says a lot about the depth of our team.”
On the women’s side the Lady Rebels finished second behind Arkansas-Little Rock despite being without their top runner Shannon Chandler.
The Rebel women were led by Samantha Mazer who finished fifth with a time of 16:09.53 and Anna Adams who finished seventh with a time of 16:27.16. Also competing for Ole Miss was Cassie Kipper (13th, 17:14.24), Micah Pioreck (17th, 17:41.52), Carolyn Hill (20th, 18:05.00) and Lindsay Doucett (24th, 18:29.23).
