Ole Miss Cross Country Competes At Alabama Relays

9/16/2006 | Track and Field

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. The Ole Miss men’s cross country team used a second place finish by freshman Barnabas Kirui to place third as a team at the Alabama Relays on Friday  hosted by the University of Alabama, while the Rebel women used a 15th  place finish from Shannon Chandler to place sixth in the team standings.

“This was a phenomenal race for Barnabas,” said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. “His time was actually better than the winning time the last time the SEC Championships were held here. He is improving in every race and for him to run this well of a race this early in the season is exciting.”

Kirui’s time of 24:09.85 placed him second only to Alabama’s Emmanuel Bor, a fellow Kenyan, who turned in a time of 24:06.72 to win the men’s race. Others running for the Rebel men included Kyle Lewis (15th, 25:56.46), Gabriel Ngwiri (18th, 26:15.49), Seth Conerly (37th, 27.13.68), Devin Darnall (51st, 27:43.39), and Bryce McKay (71st, 28:37.56).

Shannon Chandler turned in a time of 19:16.35 to finish 15th and lead the Rebel women. Others running for the Rebel women included Samantha Mazer (19th, 19:29.14), Anna Adams (27th, 19:55.08), Kirby Patterson (42nd, 20:25.48), Cassie Kipper (61st, 20:58.75), Carolyn Hill (81st, 21:55.58).

Ole Miss travels to Auburn, Ala. on Sept. 30 for the Auburn Invitational.
