Three Rebels Advance At SEC Indoor

NEW ORLEANS, La. Three members of the No. 6 nationally ranked Ole Miss men’s tennis team advanced to the second round of singles at the SEC Indoor Championships, Friday, while one doubles team moved into the third round at the Hilton Racquet and Health Fitness Club.

South Carolina had to pull out of the tournament at the last minute due to plane trouble therefore the draws had to be revised. 

Junior All-American Erling Tveit, the tournament’s No. 8 seed, defeated Alabama’s Mat Thibaudeau 6-4, 7-6(2).   He will face Danny Bryan of host LSU, in the second round Saturday.

Robbye Poole, ranked No. 79 in the nation, downed Houssam Yassine of Alabama, 6-1, 6-3 in the first round setting up a second round meeting against the No. 6 seed, Mississippi State’s Philippe Frayssinoux.

The other singles winner for the Rebels was Jakob Klaeson who cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over James Cluskey of LSU.  He will play Nate Schnugge of Georgia in the second round.

Three Rebels made their debut, and two of them took their matches to three sets before succumbing. Freshman Kalle Norberg battled Florida’s top player Greg Ouellette to 6-3 in the third set.  Junior Matthias Wellermann extended Florida’s Nestor Briceno, ranked No. 60 in the nation, before losing 6-3 in the third. 

In doubles, Klaeson teamed up with Chris Rea to reach the third round.  After a first round bye, the No. 2 seed defeated Kaden Hensel and Ben Rogers of Tennessee, 8-5.  They will meet the sixth seed, Georgia’s Travis Helgeson and Matic Omerzel in the third round Saturday.
