Rebels Shoot Down Nicholls State 87-50

1/2/2007 | Women's Basketball

OXFORD, Miss. Freshman guard Bianca Thomas exploded for 18 points and sophomore center Shawn Goff added 17 in the paint in leading Ole Miss to a 87-50 win over Nicholls State on Tuesday night at Tad Smith Coliseum. Thomas made 5-of-7 from beyond the arc on her way to a new career high of 18 points.

The Rebels opened the game on a 9-0 run in the first minute and a half of play behind Goff’s seven tallies before Nicholls State got on the board with a bucket by Claire Barry. A lay-up by Colonels guard Jamie Octave trimmed the Ole Miss lead to five at 20-15 with just over 11 minutes left in the opening frame.

Ole Miss stepped up the defense and held the Colonels scoreless for the next six minutes, pushing the lead back to 32-17. That’s when Thomas went to work. The 5-10 Henderson, Tenn., native started hitting from long range and finished the half connecting on all four of her three-point attempts.

“I had been struggling for most of the season with my three-point shot,” said Thomas. “I hit my first one and then my second and my confidence built from there. I know I still have a lot of work to do on the defensive end, but it was good to knock down some shots tonight.”

Nicholls State got on the board first in the second half with a pair of free throws by Dominique Washington before the Rebels again reeled off eight-straight points, including four from senior guard Armintie Price.

The Rebels took their largest lead of the game with just under eight minutes remaining when junior guard Tasi Worsham connected on two foul shots to give Ole Miss an 82-36 lead. Nicholls closed the gap to 37 points by outscoring the Rebels 14-5 down the stretch for the final score of 87-50.

Three Rebels finished in double figures as Price joined Goff and Thomas with 13 points of her own. In all 12 of the 13 players dressed out for the game found their way into the scoring column. Junior forward Danetra Forrest chipped in seven points, while junior guard-forward Carla Bartee, freshman guard Shantell Black and sophomore forward Brandi Tipton tossed in six points.

Tipton led the Rebels on the boards with 10, her first career double-figure rebounding performance. She also had two steals, a block and assist in the win. Goff grabbed nine boards, while Price pulled down eight as the Rebels won the rebounding battle 44-24.

Behind Thomas’ effort, the Rebels made 9-of-20 shots from beyond the arc, the most three’s this season for Ole Miss. The Rebels also made 30-of-65 from the field, good for 46.2 percent and 18-of-22 from the foul line, an 81.8 percent clip.

Octave led Nicholls State with 14 points and three steals. Funaki Kefu was the top rebounder for the Colonels with seven.

The Rebels will open Southeastern Conference play on Thursday when they travel to Auburn to face the Tigers. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. (CST) in Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum. The game will be televised live on FSN South as a part of the SEC-TV package.
