Men's Tennis To Host Murray State In Season Opener

1/22/2007 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. The No. 6 nationally ranked Ole Miss men’s tennis team will kick off the 2007 season Wednesday, as they host Murray State.  The match will be played indoors at the Gillom Sports Center at 2 p.m.

The Rebels, who recently competed at the SEC Indoor Championships, will begin a string of five straight home matches to start the dual season.

Ole Miss, a consensus pick to win its sixth consecutive SEC Western Division title, returns six of the top seven from last year’s championship team and has added three newcomers who are expected to contribute right away.

“We are excited about starting another season,” head coach Billy Chadwick said.  The returning guys are ready to compete for the SEC Championship as well as the NCAA Championship, and we have added some outstanding newcomers who will help us tremendously this year and in the future.

“The fans have been a huge part of our success in recent years, and we want to encourage everyone to come and check out the 2007 Rebels.”

All-Americans Erling Tveit and Eric Claesson lead the way for the Rebels.  Tveit had an outstanding debut at No.1 singles last year, helping Ole Miss reach the NCAA “Sweet Sixteen” for the 11th time in the history of the program and advancing to the NCAA Semifinals in singles.

Claesson had his best year as a Rebel last season, combining for a 35-11 record in singles and doubles, including 5-1 in the NCAA Championships.

Also back is last year’s SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Bram ten Berge, as well as Robbye Poole, Jakob Klaeson and Chris Rea.

Fredrik Aarum, who helped the Rebels to the NCAA Final Four in 2005, returns after sitting out last spring while recovering from a shoulder injury.

New to the Rebels in 2007, German standout Matthias Wellermann is eligible this semester and will be joined by sophomore transfer Jonas Berg and freshman Kalle Norberg.

Wellermann is ranked top 50 in German men’s rankings.   Berg earned West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year honors in 2005 at Pepperdine and Norberg was ranked No. 2 in Sweden in 18s.

Admission to all home matches is free.   Live scoring of every home match is available at www.olemisssports.com.
