Rebel Netters Down UALR 6-1

1/31/2007 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss men’s tennis team, ranked No. 6 nationally, downed UALR 6-1 Wednesday afternoon at the Gillom Sports Center in the first of three matches this week. The Rebels improved to 3-0 on the season, while UALR dropped to 3-2.

The Rebels got on the board first by sweeping the doubles.   The Swedish team of Jonas Berg and Kalle Norberg downed UALR’s Yoann Chartron and Marco Ballok 8-3.   The Rebs’ No. 1 duo of Erling Tveit and Eric Claesson secured the point by defeating the Trojan’s No. 1 team 8-5.    Ole Miss is now 83-4 when they win the doubles point dating back to the 2002 season.

Claesson gave the Rebels a 2-0 lead when he downed Edson Abrao 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.  The senior has now won six dual matches in a row dating back to last season.

Tveit increased the lead to 3-0 with a hard-fought win over UALR’s Dinko Halachev at the top spot.  The All-American took the first set 7-5, jumped out to an early break in the second and went on to take it 6-3.

UALR made it 3-1 as Rain Roigas edged out Rebel Jakob Klaeson in three sets on court three.  Klaeson won the first set 6-4, but Roigas came back to take the second and third sets 6-1, 6-3 respectively to put his team on the scoreboard.

Sophomore Jonas Berg clinched the victory with his 6-2, 6-2 win over UALR’s German Perez at the No. 4 position.

“We played a good match,” head coach Billy Chadwick said.  “The guys had been working hard leading up to this match.  We knew this would be our toughest one to date.  They are strong from top to bottom and dangerous at one.  It was a good team effort. They did what they needed to do.”

Freshman Kalle Norberg dominated Gerard Galindo 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles to add to the score.  With his win, he and Berg have teamed for a combined 10-0 record in singles and doubles in the first three matches.

“Berg and Norberg are two really strong players who are good in both singles and doubles,” Chadwick said.  “They’ve been impressive so far.”

Junior Chris Rea handed UALR’s Juan Carlos Nunez a 6-2, 6-3 loss at No. 6 singles to finish out the scoring.

The Rebels will be back in action Friday, hosting Troy at 2 p.m. at the Gillom Sports Center. It was also announced that Sunday’s match against UAB has been moved up an hour to 12 p.m. from its originally scheduled time of 1 p.m.
