Cross Country Teams Wrap Up Competition At SEC Championships

10/27/2007 | Track and Field

LEXINGTON, Ky. In the final meet before NCAA Regionals, the Ole Miss cross country teams completed competition at the SEC Championships Saturday afternoon with the women’s team earning a 12th place finish while the men did not earn a team score.

Hampered by injury most of the season, Ole Miss sophomore Barnabas Kirui opted to compete in the race but was unable to finish the event due to his reoccurring injury.  Rebel freshman Ty Gillespie was later disqualified from the race which prevented Ole Miss from earning a team score because only three of the five runners were able to finish the race.

Individually, sophomore Gabriel Ngwiri paced the Rebels with a 50th place finish with a time of 25:49.72.  Freshman Jephtah Kenei was second on the team and 73rd overall with his time of 26:27.07, while sophomore Chad Berry took 93rd overall with a time of 27:41.14.

The University of Arkansas captured the team title with a total of 36 points, while Florida (74), Alabama (82), Tennessee (102) and Mississippi State (138) rounded out the top five teams.

On the women’s side, Arkansas also won the team title as the Lady Razorbacks collected a total of 39 points.  Tennessee finished with 84 points, Georgia collected 85 points, Florida earned 96 points and Kentucky tallied 104 points to round out the top five finishing teams.

Individually for Ole Miss, senior Samantha Mazer was the top Lady Rebel finisher with a time of 23:18.65 to earn an overall finish of 65th.  Freshman Julie Little finished 75th overall and second on the team as she completed the race with a time of 24:03.31.

Sophomore Anna Adams recorded a 90th place finish with her time of 24:57.67, while freshman Allison Kneip took 92nd with a time of 25:06.24.  Junior Lindsay Doucett finished fifth on the team and 97th overall with her time of 25:52.53 before fellow junior Kirby Patterson earned a 99th place finish with a time of 27:08.96.

Ole Miss returns to action Nov. 10 when the Rebels travel to Gainesville, Fla., to take part in the NCAA Regionals hosted by the University of Florida.
