OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss junior right-handers Lance Lynn and Cody Satterwhite were named two of the top 30 professional prospects for the 2008 season by Baseball America, the publication announced on Tuesday.
The prospect list is compiled by the publication through discussions with professional scouts from across the country. Satterwhite was named the No. 23 prospect in the country, while Lynn came in at No. 26 on the list. Both players return to anchor a pitching staff this season that was one of the tops in the nation a year ago as the Rebels advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals for the third straight season and posted a third-straight 40-win season.
Lynn and Satterwhite represented the United States over the summer as both players were selected to compete with the USA Baseball National Team in the Pan American Games, winning the silver medal. The National Team also finished third at the World Port Tournament in The Netherlands.
Lynn was a weekend starter for the Rebels a year ago and was named as an All-SEC selection by the league’s coaches as he posted a team-leading 2.85 ERA among starters and an 8-5 record. The eight wins led the Rebel pitching staff. Lynn was named the National Pitcher of the Week as he turned in a one-hit performance in a win over then No. 1 Vanderbilt as he allowed only one unearned run and one hit in 8.0 innings on the mound in a 6-1 Rebel victory. Lynn also shattered the Ole Miss single season strikeout record with 146 in 2007.
Satterwhite was named an All-SEC selection as a closer by the league’s coaches a year ago as he helped lead the Rebels back to the postseason in 2007. Satterwhite posted a 4-4 record with a 3.31 ERA as he also notched four saves for Ole Miss. The junior posted wins over Alabama, Southern Miss, Georgia and Arkansas while notching saves over Auburn, South Carolina and two against Tennessee with one in the regular season and one in the SEC Tournament. Satterwhite also earned Freshman All-America honors in 2006.
The duo will take the field to help lead the Rebels in the 2008 campaign on February 23, 2008, when Ole Miss will open the season with a three-game series against Minnesota at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
Fans wanting to see the Rebel squad in action earlier than the season opener can come out to the 2007 edition of the Ole Miss Baseball Fall World Series at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday following the football game with Northwestern State.
