Lady Rebels Earning Votes In First Coaches Poll

10/31/2007 | Women's Basketball

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss women’s basketball team received a total of 31 votes in the first USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Poll of the 2007-08 season.

The Lady Rebels join six other schools in the SEC that are either ranked in the top-25 or are also receiving votes.  Defending NCAA champion Tennessee earned the top spot entering the season, followed by LSU at No. 5, Georgia at No. 10 and Vanderbilt at No. 17.  Along with Ole Miss, both Auburn and Kentucky also received votes.

In addition to the six teams inside the conference Ole Miss will face this season, the Lady Rebels will also take on five other teams that find themselves either ranked or receiving votes.  Ole Miss is slated to play against 16th-ranked Ohio State and 25th-ranked North Carolina State during the month of December.  Other teams the Lady Rebels will play this year that received votes include Wisconsin, Nebraska and Montana.

The Lady Rebels return two starters, senior Danetra Forrest and sophomore Alliesha Easley, and nine other letterwinners from last season’s club that posted a 24-11 record and reached the NCAA Elite Eight for the fifth time in school history.

The first chance to see Ole Miss in action will be Sunday evening at 6 p.m. when the Lady Rebels host DT-3 in an exhibition game from Tad Smith Coliseum.
