Ole Miss Gives Back through Hoops Exhibitions
12/18/2007 | Athletics
OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss athletics department collected approximately 3,500 pounds of canned food items and $1,400 in cash contributions during this year's three exhibition basketball games.
At the one men's and two women's preseason games in November, each fan was asked to donate at least three canned food items and/or make a cash donation for attendance. The canned items were given to the Oxford Pantry, a non-profit organization that serves the needy in the Oxford/Lafayette County community.
"We would like to thank our loyal fans for supporting our canned food drive," said Derek Horne, Ole Miss Associate Athletics Director. "A special thanks goes out to members of the Lambda Pi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity for assisting with the collecting the donated items."
"The work by those involved will not only help to feed people in the community, but will also raise awareness of the Pantry's ongoing need for food donations," said Ann O'Dell of the Oxford Pantry.
In September, Ole Miss student-athletes amassed 4,500 pounds of canned goods for the Pantry as part of the Southeastern Conference's "Together We CAN Drive" program, which saw all 12 SEC schools gather canned food in their respective communities.
