Rebels Leave Mark At ISU Classic

AMES, Iowa The Ole Miss Rebel track and field teams concluded a successful weekend as they recorded three NCAA qualifying mark at the Iowa State Classic.

 

“I felt that we had a very successful meet,” said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. “We had several athletes improve on their marks. This was a quality meet. It is the type of talent that we will see in two weeks at the SEC Championships.”

 

All-American hurdler John Yarbrough recorded another victory on Saturday as he posted a personal best time of 7.70 in the 60-meter hurdles. Yarbrough defeated a field that included a couple of NCAA scorers from last season. Yarbrough’ time moves him into fourth in the nation heading to this weekend’s action.

 

Sophomore Rodney Lockhart also turned in a solid performance in the 400 meters. The Vaden, Miss. native recorded a personal best time of 46.82 to finish third overall. Lockhart had previously qualified in the 400 meters.

 

Junior Kenyata Coleman also improved on her time in the 400 meters. Coleman posted a time of 54.03, an improvement of 0.01 seconds over her previous best. Coleman finished third overall and had previously qualified in the 400 meters.

 

Reigning SEC cross country champion Barnabas Kirui traveled to Seattle, Wash. to compete in the 5000 meters at Husky Classic hosted by the University of Washington. Kirui broke the school record with a time of 13:54.69, besting the previous record of 13:56.51 by Pablo Sierra in 1993. Kirui finished 11th overall in a field that featured the top distance runners in the nation.

 

Next up for Ole Miss is the SEC Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Kentucky, which begin on Feb. 23.
