Auburn Takes Sunday Game 3-1 Over Ole Miss

3/18/2007 | Softball

AUBURN, Ala. The Ole Miss softball team won its second straight series against the Auburn Tigers with two wins on Saturday, but Auburn prevailed on Sunday with a 3-1 victory at Jane B. Moore Field.

Ole Miss (12-17, 4-4 SEC) tallied five hits and three walks in the contest, but struggled to push across the runs, as the team left eight runners stranded on base in the contest. Despite the loss, the Rebels tie their best SEC start in program history, as the 2000 squad also began 4-4.

Freshman right-hander Becky Nye (0-10) suffered the loss after allowing three runs one earned in four innings. She allowed four hits and tallied four strikeouts.

Tiger starter Brittany Day allowed one run on four hits in a three-inning start, while reliever Holly Currie (6-8) earned the win with four scoreless frames and three strikeouts.

Ole Miss jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the third when freshman third baseman Lauren Grill drilled an RBI double down the left-field line, scoring Emily Sarver from second after her single and a Lisa Conchos sacrifice bunt. Sarver’s base knock gives her a season-high five-game hitting streak.

Auburn (14-17, 3-5 SEC) took a 2-1 lead with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the frame. With one out and a runner on third, Taryn Gray hit a ground ball to second which Conchos fired home, but the ball hit off Tramp’s glove to allow the run to score. After another out, Myesha Finney brought in Gray with a single to right field to give Auburn the lead.

The Tigers pushed their lead to two in the fourth inning on a Krista Klein suicide squeeze bunt that Grill picked up and shoveled home too late to catch the Auburn runner from third. With two runners on and one out, Nye avoided further trouble by getting the final two batters to strike out and fly out to center.

Mary Jane Callahan tossed two scoreless innings of relief for the Rebels, while Currie did not allow a run in the final four for Auburn as both teams’ offenses failed to push across a run past the fourth inning. Callahan tallied two strikeouts in the two innings of work.

Ole Miss will return home for a non-conference doubleheader against Southeast Missouri State on Wednesday, with the first game slated for 4 p.m.
