OXFORD, Miss. Sophomore right-hander Lance Lynn was named National Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association following his one-hit performance against No. 1 Vanderbilt over the weekend.
With his selection to the weekly honor, Lynn is automatically named to the Clemens Award Watch List as a candidate for national Pitcher of the Year as given out annually by the writer’s association.
Lynn led the Rebels to a 6-1 victory over the top-ranked Commodores as the sophomore threw a career-long 8.0 innings against Vanderbilt, holding a no-hitter into the eighth inning. He allowed only one unearned run in the eighth inning on one hit. In the first seven innings with Lynn on the mound, only four batters reached base and only one advanced past first base in that time.
The loss was the first of the season for the Commodores, snapping a 20-game winning streak as Lynn held one of the top offenses in the Southeastern Conference in check. Lynn struck out five, walked three and allowed only the one hit in the outing.
Lynn joins junior right-hander Will Kline on the Clemens Award Watch List as Kline was named to the list in the preseason.
Ole Miss will return to action at 4 p.m. on Tuesday against South Alabama on the road before returning home for a weekend series against No. 25 Alabama.
