Women's Basketball Team Honored At Awards Banquet

4/16/2007 | Women's Basketball

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss women’s basketball team handed out its team awards and honored its three seniors at the 2006-07 Women’s Basketball Awards Banquet Sunday evening at the Indoor Practice Facility. More than 250 people attended the sold out event, making the evening a very special affair.

A pair of academic awards kicked off the ceremony as junior forward Carla Bartee was awarded the Most Improved Grade Point Average Award and freshman guard Elizabeth Robertson was presented the Highest Grade Point Average Award from senior academic counselor Drew Clinton.

Sophomore center Shawn Goff was the winner of the Rebel Iron Award for her dedication to basketball during the off season training program, while senior forward Jada Mincy was the recipient of the Helping Hand Award for her commitment to community service.

Goff was the choice for the Eleanor Shaw Super Sub Award for her impact on the court from a reserve role. The Unsung Hero Award was handed to senior guard Ashley Awkward. Awkward was honored for being a contributor who got the job done on the court without a lot of fanfare or attention.

Senior guard Armintie Price was given the Defensive Stopper Award. The Defensive Stopper Award was given to the player that finished plays on the defensive end of the court. Price also won the Most Valuable Player Award. The 5-9 Myrtle, native, led the team in scoring (19.1), rebounding (8.8), steals (3.7) and assists (4.7). She was named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year and earned unanimous First Team All-SEC honors on her way to Kodak/WBCA All-America honors.

Price was also presented the Van Chancellor Coaches Award. The award was given to the player whom possessed the best attitude, work ethic, cooperation, unselfishness and enthusiasm.

The last award of the evening was handed down to Mincy, as she was the 2007 Lady Rebel Award winner presented by the Fastbreak Club. The Lady Rebel Award is given to the player that best exemplifies the Ole Miss women’s basketball experience, the player that combines excellence in academics, athletics and community service.

After the individual awards were handed out, the team was presented with individual trophies for participating in the 2007 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship. The team was also presented with a signed ball commemorating their Elite Eight NCAA Tournament appearance.

The 2006-07 Rebel squad posted 24 wins on the season, the most since the 1993-94 team collected a 24-9 overall mark. They made their fourth-straight postseason appearance, including their third NCAA visit in the last four seasons. The Rebels advanced to the Elite Eight after picking up wins over TCU, defending national champion Maryland and Big 12 Conference champion Oklahoma before falling to eventual national champion Tennessee.

Price, who was drafted by the Chicago Sky with the third pick in the 2007 WNBA draft, along with Awkward and Mincy will make their departures, leaving head coach Carol Ross with 11 letterwinners returning to Oxford next season, along with signees Kayla Holloway and Kayla Melson.
