OXFORD, Miss. -- Ole Miss defensive lineman Jeremy Garrett of Senatobia, Miss., has been selected as the 2007 recipient of the Chucky Mullins Courage Award, which goes to a rising senior defensive player each year.

The award, sponsored by Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, honors the late Chucky Mullins, who had his Ole Miss career come to an end during the 1989 Homecoming game against Vanderbilt when he was paralyzed after making a tackle. After returning to his studies at Ole Miss, Mullins passed away on May 6, 1991.

The selection of Garrett was announced during Friday night's 18th annual Chucky Mullins Courage Award Banquet, which is sponsored each year by Phi Beta Sigma and Phi Kappa Psi fraternities. Garrett will be recognized Saturday afternoon when Ole Miss conducts its annual Red-Blue spring football game, set for 1 p.m. at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium/Hollingsworth Field.

Garrett, who wears No. 54, will have the honor of wearing a "38" patch on his jersey during his senior campaign. Mullins wore No. 38 as a player at Ole Miss.

"This is a big-time award and we are honored for Jeremy and his family," said Ole Miss head coach Ed Orgeron. "Jeremy is a hard worker and very diligent, and we nicknamed him the Beaver. He's the nose tackle of our defense and an outstanding young man with great character."

"This award really means a lot to our University," Garrett said upon accepting the 2007 Chucky Mullins Courage Award. "Chucky was a big inspiration to the school and I hope I can represent this award as well those players who earned it in the past.

"It's a blessing to me to receive such an award, because of the way Chucky represented this University and the legacy he left. His legacy and this award are very important to us and the Ole Miss family."

Garrett battled through injuries during the 2006 season as he appeared in six games, starting the season opener against Memphis and then the LSU and Mississippi State games to end the year. He posted a career high eight tackles, including five solo hits, against LSU and was selected Rebel Quarterback Club Trench Player of the Week. He was honored again by the Quarterback Club after being credited with five tackles in the Mississippi State season finale.

A three-year letterman, Garrett has played in 21 games during his Ole Miss career, starting five games. Entering the 2007 season, he has 43 tackles, including 22 solo stops, while having four and one-half tackles for loss.

In 2005, he played in all 11 games and started the first two games of the year at defensive tackle against Memphis and Vanderbilt as he helped the Rebel defense finish the regular season 14th in the nation in pass defense, 27th in total defense and 31st in scoring defense.

After being redshirted in 2003, Garrett appeared in four games his freshman season, seeing action against Alabama, Vanderbilt, Wyoming and Arkansas.

While attending Ole Miss, Garrett has also excelled in the classroom, having been named to the Chancellor's Honor Roll and the U.M.A.A. Honor Roll.

Garrett joins 17 former Ole Miss Rebels to receive the Chucky Mullins Courage Award. They include Chris Mitchell, Jeff Carter, Trea Southerland, Johnny Dixon, Alundis Brice, Michael Lowery, Derek Jones, Nate Wayne, Gary Thigpen, Ronnie Heard, Anthony Magee, Kevin Thomas, Lanier Goethie, Jamil Northcutt, Eric Oliver, Kelvin Robinson and Patrick Willis.
