Ole Miss Drops Series To Mississippi State With Doubleheader Sweep

4/7/2007 | Softball

STARKVILLE, Miss. After winning 3-2 on Friday night, Ole Miss was unable to come away with a series victory after a pair of losses on Saturday, 7-4 and 8-0 (six innings), at the MSU Softball Field.

The Rebels dropped to 17-24 overall and 8-9 in Southeastern Conference play, while the Bulldogs improved to 26-17 overall and surpassed Ole Miss to take over sole possession of fourth place in the league standings with a 9-8 mark.

Ole Miss out-hit Mississippi State 9-5 in the first game, but Rebel pitchers surrendered a school-record 10 walks and the defense made four errors as the Bulldogs won 7-4.

Three different Rebels registered multiple hits in the effort. Freshman shortstop Ashley Dowdy led the way, going 2-for-3 with a double and home run, two runs and two RBI. Senior DP/pitcher Mary Jane Callahan went 2-for-4 with a run and freshman catcher Amber Tramp was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Callahan extended her season-high hitting streak to six games.

Katie Cooley led five Mississippi State players with one hit apiece. The DP had three RBI and scored once.

The Bulldogs cracked the scoreboard with two runs in the first inning for the second straight game. Courtney Bures hit an RBI single to left-center to score Nakita Boyce before eventually coming around to score on a wild pitch. State had just one hit in the frame, but benefited from three walks and the wild pitch.

Ole Miss countered with a run in the top of the second. Dowdy led off with a stand-up double to right-center and Tramp brought her in with a single down the third-base line. The RBI was Tramp’s third in two games of the series.

Another Nye wild pitch gave Mississippi State a 3-1 advantage in the bottom of the second. Katie Johnson led off the frame with a double over Alise Doubt’s head in left field, moved to third on a sacrifice and scored on the errant pitch.

Dowdy tied the game at 3-3 with one swing of the bat in the top of the third with a two-out, two-run bomb just to the right of straightaway center, scoring Callahan. The long ball was Dowdy’s second of the season and Ole Miss’ 26th overall, tying for the third-most in a season in school history.

Mississippi State regained the lead at 4-3 in the bottom of the third after an RBI single by Sammie Jo Bailey, knocking Nye out of the game with one out and two runners on base. Callahan got the final two outs of the inning to prevent another score.

The Bulldogs made it 5-3 on a two-out, bases-loaded walk by Cooley on the 13th pitch of her fourth-inning at-bat after multiple foul balls.

The Rebels again cut the deficit to one run at 5-4 in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Lauren Grill, which scored Lisa Conchos, who had singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch.

Cooley pushed the Bulldog lead to 7-4 with a two-run home run to left-center, scoring Bures. The homer was the first Callahan has allowed in conference play this season.

Sara Hickerson (5-4) earned the win in relief for State. She went the final four frames and allowed one run on three hits with two strikeouts.

Nye (2-12) suffered the loss for Ole Miss, going the first 2 1-3 innings and allowing four runs on three hits with five walks and a pair of strikeouts. Callahan went 3 2-3 and gave up three runs two earned on two hits with five walks and five K’s.

Game 2

The Rebels struggled in the final game of the series, losing 8-0 in an abbreviated six innings for the first run-rule loss of the season.

Mississippi State scored in the first inning for the third straight game as Chelsea Bramlett singled, stole second and eventually scored when Courtney Bures reached on a Rebel infield error with two outs.

The Bulldogs added a second run in the bottom of the third. Hayle Guess scored on a Bures groundout after tripling to left-center.

Ole Miss threatened to break up the shutout in the top of the fifth after Lauren Rowe walked and Alise Doubt hit an infield single after one out. Miller retired the next two Rebel batters to preserve the 2-0 margin.

Mississippi State extended its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Bures plated home on a Sammie Jo Bailey ground ball to first which went off Rowe’s glove for the second Rebel error of the game.

The Bulldogs scored five runs on seven consecutive hits in the sixth to take the run-rule victory. Included among the hits were back-to-back triples by Nakita Boyce and Guess followed by back-to-back doubles by Bures and Cooley. Guess set a school record with her three triples in the contest.

Junior lefty Tara Willitt (7-5) suffered the loss, as she went 5 1-3 innings and gave up seven runs six earned and 11 hits, while striking out three.

Mississippi State’s Kelli Miller (11-7) earned the victory with six full shutout innings, as she allowed three hits and struck out four.

The Rebels are 1-3 against the Bulldogs this season after sweeping last year’s series 3-0.

Ole Miss returns to action against another in-state foe on Wednesday with a non-conference home game against Mississippi Valley State, with first pitch slated for 6 p.m.
