No. 10 Rebels Shutout Bulldogs 9-0 To Take Series

4/8/2007 | Baseball

OXFORD, Miss. Pitching was the name of the day for the Rebels as freshman Nathan Baker led a trio of young arms on Sunday as No. 10 Ole Miss (24-10, 7-5 SEC) shut out Georgia (11-21, 4-8 SEC) by a score of  9-0.

The win gave the Rebels the series win over the Bulldogs and marked the first time Georgia had been shut out in conference play since the 2005 season. Ole Miss’ last shutout win in conference play also came in the 2005 season.

It is the third combined shutout of the year for the Rebels. Ole Miss out hit the Bulldogs 12 to 4 on the afternoon.

Baker (4-1) picked up the win in his first weekend start as he allowed only three hits, one walk and struck out four batters in his 6.0 innings on the mound. Justin Cryer walked two and struck out one in 2.0 innings of work, while Cody Satterwhite allowed only one hit in the ninth.

Justin Earls (2-2) suffered the loss for the Bulldogs as he gave up four runs, three earned, on five hits with four walks and a strikeout. The Bulldogs used three other pitchers on the afternoon who gave up five more runs on seven hits and three strikeouts.

Cody Overbeck led the Rebels at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance with three RBI and two runs scored. Zack Cozart also went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored, while Zach Miller was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

“The story today is Nathan Baker,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “He gave great effort and we needed that on a Sunday. We have not controlled the mound like that in a Sunday game all year. It was great to see a true freshman perform like that. Offensively, we took advantage of runners in scoring position and getting some key two-out hits.”

Ole Miss got on the board in the second when Overbeck scored from third on a single from Miller. Overbeck singled to open the inning before moving to second on a grounder to third from Logan Power. Power reached safely on a throwing error. Overbeck then moved to third on a grounder to short from Kyle Mills that resulted in a double-play.

The Rebels added to the lead in the third inning when Overbeck came up with a bases-loaded single, scoring Jordan and Justin Henry to push the Rebels out to a 3-0 lead. Cozart moved to third before a sac fly from Kyle Mills pushed the lead to four as Cozart crossed the plate.

Ole Miss pushed another run across in the fifth inning when Brett Basham came up with a sac fly with the bases loaded, scoring Fuller Smith from third. Smith entered the game to run for Mills who reached on a single to open the inning.

Georgia loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh inning as Baker walked Rich Poythress and then gave up a single to Matt Olson. Cryer entered in relief, walking Matt Robbins before getting the first out on a pop fly to shallow left field from Matt Cerione. Cryer then got Jake Crane to line into a double play at shortstop with Robbins being thrown out on the play to end the Georgia threat.

The Rebels added four more runs on four hits in the eighth inning, moving out to an 9-0 lead on the Bulldogs. Cody Satterwhite then entered the game and held the Bulldogs in check in the ninth as Ole Miss picked up the win.

Ole Miss will return to action on Wednesday when the Rebels travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to take on the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss. First-pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Pete Taylor Park.
