Rebels Unable To Complete Rally, Fall 9-7 To Kentucky

5/13/2007 | Baseball

OXFORD, Miss. The Rebel offense came alive late, but the late rally wasn’t enough as No. 18 Ole Miss (33-20, 14-13 SEC) fell 9-7 to Kentucky (33-17-1, 12-14-1 SEC) on Sunday to drop the first home series of the season.

Ole Miss had won eight consecutive home series heading into the weekend. The last home series loss came at the hands of Vanderbilt in the opening weekend of conference play in the 2006 season.

Jordan Henry led the Rebels at the plate with a 2-for-5 performance as he scored two runs on the afternoon. Zack Cozart was 1-for-5 at the plate with a two-run home run as he scored two runs and notched two RBI.

Nathan Baker (6-2) suffered the loss, his first in Southeastern Conference play, as he gave up five runs on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Only three of the runs scored against Baker were earned. Brett Bukvich, Justin Cryer and Cody Satterwhite all saw time on the mound for the Rebels to close out the game.

Greg Dombrowski (5-2) picked up the win for Kentucky as he allowed seven runs, three earned, on eight hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Aaron Lovett picked up his sixth save as he worked the final 2.1 innings with no runs on one hit. He entered the game with the Rebels trailing 8-6 in the seventh inning.

“Kentucky thrives on walks and hit by pitches and we gave them too many of them today,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “Once they got base runners, we didn’t make the plays in the field. It wasn’t a good day for us defensively.”

Kentucky got on the board in the second when Antone DeJesus came up with a bases loaded, two-RBI single with two outs on the board. Baker then got the next batter to fly out to center field to get out of the top of the second with the Wildcats leading 2-0.

Ole Miss got a run back in the bottom half of the frame when Fuller Smith came up with a two-out RBI single through the right side to score Logan Power from second as he slid under the tag in the play at the plate. Power reached on a fielder’s choice before moving to second on a groundout to first by Evan Button.

The Rebels took the lead in the third inning when Zack Cozart homered to left field to put Ole Miss up 3-2. Jordan Henry scored on the play after leading off the inning with a single up the middle before Cozart’s shot.

The Wildcats answered in the fourth when Keenan Wiley hit a chop single to second base to score Ryan Wilkes from third. Wilkes singled before moving to second on a passed ball and third on a sac bunt. Kentucky then took the lead again on a fielding error at second on a grounder from DeJesus that allowed Wiley to score from first and saw DeJesus move to second on the error.

Kentucky extended the lead in the fifth inning after Coughlin walked and the Rebels brought in Bukvich to relieve Baker. A double to right center from Brown put runners at second and third before a wild pitch allowed Coughlin to score and moved Brown to third. A sac fly from Wilkes pushed Brown across the plate as Kentucky took a 6-3 lead on the Rebels.

Two more runs crossed the plate for the Wildcats in the sixth inning as Kentucky took the lead out to 8-3 on the Rebels.

Ole Miss loaded the bases with one out in the seventh inning and pushed a run across on a groundout to first from Justin Henry that scored Alex Kliman, who pinch hit for Basham. The play allowed Cozart to move to second and Jordan Henry to move to third. A double down the left field line from Overbeck scored both runners and cut the lead to 8-6 in favor of the Wildcats. Zach Miller then singled through the left side to score Overbeck who had moved to third on a wild pitch and pull the Rebels to within one at 8-7.

Kentucky loaded the bases on a walk and back-to-back singles around a fly out before Ryan Wiles singled through the right side to push a run across and extend the lead back out to 9-7 in favor of the Wildcats.

The Rebels were unable to push another run across the plate, as Kentucky held the Rebels off the board to grab the win and take the series two games to one.

Ole Miss will return to action when the Rebels close out the regular season on the road at Arkansas. The Rebels and Razorbacks will take the field for a 7:05 p.m. start on Thursday evening. The final weekend series of the season is played Thursday through Saturday to allow teams an extra day for travel and preparations for the Southeastern Conference Tournament.
