Rebel Golfers Experience Tough First Day At NCAA East Regional

5/17/2007 | Men's Golf

ALPHARETTA, Ga. The Ole Miss men’s golf team experienced a tough first day at the NCAA East Regional, shooting a 21-over 309 to tie for 20th in the team standings at the Golf Club of Georgia’s Lakeside Course.

Head coach Ernest Ross said upon learning of his team’s selection to the East Regional, that it would be tough on the Rebels, who had not played this course before, while many of the teams have participated in tournaments here throughout the year.

Rebel junior David Marino led the team with a 3-over 75.  Senior Chris Rogers finished with a 76, and seniors Callum Macaulay and Brice Bailey each carded a 79.  Sophomore Will Roebuck turned in an 80, which didn’t count in the team score.

“The guys are mad and frustrated,” Ross said.  We had too many double and triple bogeys.  The golf course played tougher on the back nine, with the wind picking up.  We didn’t handle it well.  We are going to get back after it tomorrow and fire at the course and see if we can make a move.”

Cameron Tringale shot a 5-under-par 67, and Chesson Hadley carded a 68 to pace Georgia Tech to a 4-under-par team total of 284 Thursday, and the 10th-ranked Yellow Jackets took a two-shot lead over Georgia after the first round.  Duke, who was paired with the Rebels, shot even-par 288 and is in third.

Other SEC members include Florida, who stands in fifth with a 290 and Auburn, who shot a 293 to tie for sixth.

The Rebels will tee off beginning at 7:05 a.m., ET from the first tee.  To follow Ole Miss go to www.olemisssports.com and click on the live scoring link in the upcoming events box.
