Macaulay Shooting To Make Walker Cup Team

6/22/2007 | Men's Golf

Former Ole Miss golfer Callum Macaulay said at the beginning of his senior season he wanted to lead the Rebels back to the postseason before his career ended.  He accomplished that, helping the team advance to the 2007 NCAA East Regional.

Since leaving Ole Miss, Macaulay has been busy working on another goal, making the European Walker Cup Team.

This week, Macaulay helped himself towards that goal by reaching the semifinals at the British Amateur Championship at the Royal Lytham St. Anne’s Golf Course.  It is considered Europe’s biggest amateur championship.

Macaulay shot 66-67--133 to finish third in stroke play qualifying to grab one of the 64 spots in match play.  In his first match, he defeated Sam Stuart of St. Annes on the 19th hole.  In the second round, he won 4 & 3 against Rhys Enoch of Truro, England.  Macaulay reached the quarterfinals by knocking out Kenny LeSager of France on the second extra hole.

In his quarterfinal match, Macaulay downed fellow Scotsman, Ross Kellett, 4 & 3 before losing a high-quality match in the semis to the 2006 Australian Amateur Champion, Tim Stewart, by one hole.

“Obviously I’m disappointed, but I made a great four at 17 to keep the match alive,” he said.  “Overall I’m happy with the way I played, and it gives me something to build on for the rest of the year.”

The first stage of the championship involved 288 players each of whom played two rounds of 18 holes, one to be played on each of the two courses. The 64 lowest scores over the 36 holes and ties for 64th place advanced to match play which began Wednesday. Each match consists of one round of 18 holes except the final which will feature 36 holes.

Macaulay helped lead the Rebels to the NCAA East Regional this past season and their best finish in the SEC Championships (4th) in 19 years, while becoming the 16th All-SEC player in Ole Miss men’s golf history.

“It’s unbelievable how much improvement Callum made from his first year at Ole Miss until now,” Rebel head coach Ernest Ross said.  “He loves the game of golf, and he loves to compete.  His goal is to represent Europe on the Walker Cup team, and this helped him make great strides toward achieving that goal.”

Macaulay plans to turn professional at some point, but says that can wait.  He maintains a part-time job in a golf shop to help finance his amateur career.  Between now and Sept. 8, Macaulay will play in several more tournaments in Europe hoping to earn one of the coveted spots for the Walker Cup, the amateur version of the Ryder Cup.

This year’s Walker Cup will be played Sept. 8-9 at the Royal County Down Golf Club in Newcastle, County Down, Ireland.

If this past season at Ole Miss is any indication, don’t bet against Macaulay.
