BANGKOK, Thailand Ole Miss All-American Barnabas Kirui concluded an outstanding 2006-07 season by winning a silver medal in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Monday at the World University Games.

Kirui, who won the NCAA title in the steeplechase this season, finished in a time of 8:22.67. He finished second to Halli Akkas of Turkey, who won the gold with a time of 8:20.83. Kirui’s time was just off his personal best time of 8:20.36.

The silver medal concludes a banner year for Kirui. He won the 10th national title in school history when he claimed the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June. He won four SEC titles in 2006-07 and became the fourth runner in league history to win all three distance races (5,000 and 10,000 meters and 3,000-meter steeplechase) at an SEC meet. He was named the 2007 SEC Track and Field Runner of the Year and the 2006 SEC Cross Country Freshman and Runner of the Year. He was also named the NCAA South Regional Cross Country Runner of the Year.

In the classroom, Kirui was named the National Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year, by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, and earned first-team Academic All-America honors from ESPN The Magazine.
